Considering the He-111 was basically obsolete by the start of WWII, they were probably trying to get more miles out of a dated airframe.

Absolutely. It was built as a glider tug for the ME 321 Gigant, after the original plan of towing with three Bf-110s turned out to be... iffy. This is iffy on its own merits, as was the final plan of just putting engines on the damn thing. "Z" in case you're wondering, is not because they felt like making a full alphabet of 111 variants, but for "Zwilling" - "twin".
